Abstract

The article intends to trace a brief bio-bibliographic profile of one of the leading figures in the field of documentation in Italy. Maria Pia Carosella has profoundly marked the birth and development of the profession of the documentalist in Italy. From the 1950s until the end of her long career, she worked within the library structures of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) and collaborated with Paolo Bisogno in the activities of the Istituto di Studi e Ricerca sulla Documentazione Scientifica (ISRDS). Starting from the interest in the role and importance of special libraries, she promoted the profile of the professions linked
to the retrieval, selection and dissemination of information. The article highlights her role in the birth of the Association for Advanced Documentation (AIDA) and her international projection aimed at creating the epistemological foundations of the documentalist profession.
